As indicated on the map, Lang Son town is located in the upper northeast area of North Vietnam, approximately 13 kilometers from the China border. From Hanoi, it's about a 2 1/2 hour scenic drive through the mountains. About 80% of the province of Lang Son is mountains and 19% is covered by forest. It is disected by the Ky Cung River, which originates in China and flows into Halong Bay. Most of the 700,000 people living in the province belong to ethnic minority groups which include the Nung, Tay, Kinh, Dao, and Ngai. Skye's ethnic group is the Nungs.

Most of the population lives in rural areas, since the main occupation is farming; however, there are many forms of trade since it borders China. The agricultural products of the region are rice, maize, manioc, and tobacco. Also various fruits such as plums, lychees, and cinnamon apples are produced. The province has many problems which include low per-capita income, high population growth, and a lack of industrialization.
